At Calla Cattery, we breed American Shorthairs so that we can show them in Championship cat shows.
We do not breed in order to sell kittens. A breeder is fortunate to produce 1 or 2 show cats in
each litter. The other kittens are just as important to us and so, we are committed to the
goals and practices listed below. If, we become unable to show our cats, we will
discontinue our breeding program.
- Calla Cattery is committed to the health and well being of the cats we breed.
- Our goal is to improve the quality of the American Shorthair breed, and to raise the
bar in the strength, health, beauty and personality of the breed.
- We strive to find owners for our kittens and cats that are loving, competent, responsible
and financially able to provide the best possible environment for the cat.
- Calla works to educate and assist kitten buyers in selecting a breed or in determining the
household pet that is the best fit for their family and other pets in the household.
- We love to coach new fanciers so that they can learn how to show their cats and
to enjoy the fun and competition at cat shows.
- All Calla Cats are sold under Contract including:
- Health guarantee
- Requirement to neuter/spay
- Statement of show, pet or breeder quality
- Statement of understanding regarding the future care of the cat
- Vaccination records
- Pedigree, price and other terms of the agreement
- Shipping a kitten is a serious undertaking and not recommended if you can
find a kitten close to home. For more info about shipping: About
Transporting a Kitten/Cat
- We like to stay in touch with Calla kitten/cat buyers. We encourage you
to join the Calla Alumni and to send us notes and pictures of the cat as he/she
grows up.
- As a relatively new breeder we do not sell kittens with Breeding
Rights. This means that you cannot breed the kitten and declare the
litter as pedigree. We'll let you know if the cat is show quality or
not-- sometimes you can purchase a show quality kitten at a pet quality price
if you agree to show the cat as a "Premier" or neuter/spay.
- We remain available to answer questions or discuss problems that kitten
buyers may be experiencing. We can offer tips for grooming, feeding, litter,
acclimation to other animals and some health issues.
- Calla cats are fed a simple diet. They do not eat raw meat or raw eggs.
Our cats eat Nutro Complete Care dry mixed with IAMS Original chicken flavor. Our cats
have excellent health and weight. We help each kitten buyer to understand the food
that their kitten prefers.
- About Vaccinations:
- Calla Cattery is free of Feline Leukemia, and we do not vaccinate for
this disease. Please check with your vet to see if you cat is at
risk for contracting Feline Leukemia (ie: if you have a cat that goes
outdoors and indoors).
- According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, Feline
Leukemia is a "non core" vaccine, meaning that it should not
be needed by ALL cats, but certainly by cats in risk
situations. Get educated about vaccinations!! Vets
differ widely in vaccination protocols-- they aren't all wrong and they
aren't all right, so it pays to understand the vaccinations and to be able
to ask your vet questions and to challenge the vaccination
protocol. http://www.winnfelinehealth.org/health/vaccination-guidelines.html
- Over-vaccinating a cat is as deadly as not vaccinating at all. If
you allow your vet to re-vaccinate a kitten that has already been
vaccinated, your health guarantee will be null and void.
- If you vaccinate for FIP, you will also invalidate your health
guarantee. There is no known test, reason, cure or vaccination
for FIP that is reliable. The vaccination can give your cat the
deadly FIP virus and can kill the cat.
